Children first learn that the letter 'e' makes the short 'e' sound as in egg. In the words: we, me, she, be and he, the 'e' makes the long 'eeeee' sound. This can be tricky for children until they have been taught that the letter 'e' can make the short or long 'e' sound. BLENDING PRACTICE with CVC words. A key component to learning how to read is BLENDING! If a child cannot blend (blend individual sounds together to read the word) they will not be able to read. At first, children say each sound and then blend to read the word. To make children into fluent readers, they need a lot of blending practice as the aim is that they will be able to read words by sight. Practising with word families like this is a great support to building up reading speed and confidence.

Once children know the sounds, a next step for them is building reading fluency. You can follow these steps: 1. Read words aloud with the sounds they know using sound buttons 2. Read words in their heads using the sounds buttons 3.
