Mechanical impedance is the ratio of a potential (e.g., force) to a flow (e.g., velocity) where the arguments of the real (or imaginary) parts of both increase linearly with time. Examples of potentials are: force, sound pressure, voltage, temperature.

The mechanical impedance is the complex ratio of the effective force acting on a specified area of an acoustic medium or mechanical device to the resulting effective linear velocity through or of that area, respectively.

By measuring, for ex- ample, the mechanical impedance of points on a structure, knowledge is gained about its response to vibra- tional forces at different frequencies.
