Mar 17, 2022 · Look at the sidewall rating for weight and air pressure on a 14 ply and compare it to a 16 ply. As far as air pressure of 85 psi, he is somewhat correct as far as drive or trailer tires. There are charts that will tell you the minimum amount of air required to haul a certain weight.

Apr 1, 2023 · I always ran 16 ply steers on everything. I figured because they're steer tires they carry more weight and take more abuse than the other 16 tires so why not. Up front cost wise not that much difference between them and 14's. Hard to imagine much difference in ride quality these are semi truck tires after all.

Mar 17, 2022 · The difference between 14 ply and 16 ply is load rating. The 16 ply is made to handle more weight. And if you read the recommended air pressure on the 16 ply side wall it states 120lbs. 16ply are a good tire for steer tires and spread axles. 85lbs in a tire will cause the tire to run hotter, and effect wear. I run all my tires at 100 to 105.

Dec 21, 2008 · When designers needed to add air pressure capability to increase the load a specific size tire could carry, they would simply add more plies of cotton cord. Therefore, a 16-ply tire had 16 actual plies of cotton cord, while a 14-ply tire only had 12 plies of cord. This enabled the 16-ply tire to be run at a higher PSI and thus carry more weight.

Oct 3, 2018 · So I just put on new tires all the way around my truck. I kept the truck tires at 10 ply but jumped from 10 to 12 on the trailer. From this point on, my MPG has suffered. When empty I was getting about 14-15ish MPG around 70 mph. Now I'm getting around 12ish MPG. Loaded, it drops a lot more.

Loaded weight is usually 90% of legal axle group weights, and empty 50% of the time. Been buying the Chinese tires because I am replacing one a week, but maybe I should be buying the brand name tires at 3 times the cost.

So now I'm all in on buying the remaining 10 tires that will have my truck/trailer out of recaps for good. So I started researching the best psi configuration for the tires and it seems the original 100 psi is "overinflation". I have 18 295/75/22.5 tires.

I always run light on the steers, usually about 10k, no more than 11k because I can't move my trailer more forward.
