Mar 6, 2024 · The presence of the total anti-HBc antigen is needed to diagnose a patient with a hepatitis B infection. The results of the HBsAg, anti-HBs, and IgM anti-HBc tests indicate a patient’s type of hepatitis B and if they have developed immunity.

HBsAg (hepatitis B surface antigen) is the first serologic marker to appear in a new acute infection, which can be detected as early as 1 week and as late as 9 weeks (range: 6-60 days), with an average of one month after exposure to the hepatitis B virus (HBV).

This test is useful for quantitative (i.e., titer) evaluation of possible immunity in individuals who are at increased risk for exposure to hepatitis B (i.e., hemodialysis unit personnel, venipuncturists, etc.).

Only one sample of blood is needed for a hepatitis B blood test, but the "Hepatitis B Panel" includes three parts. All three test results are needed to fully understand someone's hepatitis B status.
