A Ugandan health official says a nurse died of Ebola, in the first recorded fatality since the country's last outbreak ended in 2023.

Uganda has confirmed an outbreak of the Ebola virus in the capital Kampala with the first confirmed patient dying from it on Wednesday, the health ministry said on Thursday. It is the East African country's ninth outbreak since it recorded its first infection of the viral disease in 2000.

Kenya has heightened surveillance across all counties and border points following the confirmation of an Ebola outbreak in neighbouring Uganda. Uganda's health ministry on Thursday declared an Ebola outbreak after a 32-year-old male nurse working at Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala succumbed to the Sudan Ebola virus Wednesday.
