Tanner Houck took a big step toward returning to the Red Sox rotation Wednesday, making a rehab start with the WooSox.

An injured Red Sox starter returned to the mound for his first rehab outing on Wednesday, facing off against a future Hall of Famer and a fellow University of Missouri grad.

In nine starts for the Red Sox this season, Houck is 0-3 with an 8.04 ERA. He was an American League All-Star last season, when the 6-foot-5 right-hander went 9-10 with a 3.12 ERA in 30 starts.

Houck, who was placed on the injured list on May 14 with a flexor pronator strain of his right elbow. He said he’s not feeling any pain or stiffness in his arm now.

When he does return, he could have a new pitch in his arsenal, too. The Red Sox are actively looking for tweaks after Houck pitched to an abysmal 8.04 ERA in nine starts (43 ⅔ innings).
