But it is far from the only volcano in the range. From southern British Columbia to Northern California, the Cascade Range comprises an 800-mile chain of volcanoes.
Also known as Lassen Peak, the mountain is the southernmost active volcano in the Cascade Range. It is located east of Redding, California, about 100 miles south of the Oregon border.
On Earth, subducting plates start melting as they sink, feeding volcanoes along plate boundaries. Such volcanoes include Japan’s Mount Fuji and western North America’s Cascade Range.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, Mount St. Helens was formed during four eruptive stages beginning about 275,000 years ago and has been the most active volcano in the Cascade Range.
