Brodie Johnston looked like a star, but Vanderbilt baseball's offense otherwise struggled in the Southern California College Baseball Classic.

Vanderbilt baseball's (9-3) second trip west this season wasn't as friendly as the first as the Commodores lost consecutive games at the Southern California College Baseball Classic after winning two of three in Arizona to open the year.

The bullpen was mostly strong. Sawyer Hawks pitched three hitless innings with one walk and five strikeouts Friday. On Saturday, Brennan Seiber, England Bryan, Matthew Shorey and Miller Green combined to allow no hits in 4⅓ innings with two walks and seven strikeouts, though Jakob Schulz did allow two runs while recording just one out.

Vanderbilt baseball (9-1) made it eight wins in a row after two big early innings and strong pitching shut down the UCLA Bruins (7-3) to take their first game in the Southern California College Baseball Classic 8-3.

Vanderbilt baseball opened up the Southern California College Baseball Classic with an 8-3 win at UCLA on Friday night. The Commodores (9-1) got a triple and a home run from freshman Brodie Johnston and a home run from Mac Rose. They gave up just three hits to the Bruins (7-3). Vanderbilt will face Southern Cal at 4 p.m. CT Saturday.
