A senior Hamas official says “no progress” has been made in the latest round of talks on the second phase of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

Hamas said on Saturday that it rejected Israel's "formulation" of extending the first phase of the ceasefire in Gaza, on the day the first stage of the deal was set to expire. The group's spokesperson Hazem Qassem also told Al-Araby TV there were no current talks for a second ceasefire phase in Gaza with the group.

Officials from Israel, Qatar and the United States started 'intensive discussions' on the cease-fire accord's second phase in Cairo, Egypt‘s state information service said.

Negotiations between Israel and Hamas over a second phase, in which Hamas would release dozens of remaining hostages in exchange for more prisoners and a lasting ceasefire, have not yet begun.

Israeli negotiators will be heading to Cairo to try and maintain the country's ceasefire deal with Hamas. The news comes hours after the final hostage-prisoner exchange that was part of the ceasefire's first phase.

The six-week ceasefire in Gaza came to an end on Saturday, with Hamas stating that no discussions were taking place for the second phase. Hamas further accused Israel of failing to honor its commitment to fully withdraw from Gaza and bring an end to the war.
