A day before a shutdown deadline, Senate Democrats are mounting a last-ditch protest over a Republican-led spending bill that already passed the House

The bill puts significant pressure on Democrats in the Senate, whose votes will be needed in order to avoid a shutdown. The federal government runs out of money at the end of the day on Friday.

Chuck Schumer, the top Democrat in the US Senate, said he would support a Republican stop-gap funding bill, increasing the likelihood that Congress will avoid the risk of a government shutdown.
