Tsunami warnings were issued to Tonga after the Pacific island was struck by a 7.1 magnitude earthquake but were later lifted. Evacuation orders are in place as residents brace for the second prong of the storm.

An earthquake of magnitude 7.1 hit the Tonga Islands on Sunday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Tonga was rocked by an earthquake which initial reports suggested could cause hazardous waves on its coastline.
