A 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck southeast of Pangai, Tonga, early on March 31, 2025, at 1:18 a.m. local time. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers and was felt strongly in the region. It was centered approximately 168 kilometers northeast of Nuku‘alofa, the capital of Tonga.
