South Sudan’s main opposition party says a peace agreement that ended a five-year civil war has collapsed, following the arrest of its leader Riek Machar a day earlier

There are concerns that South Sudan is on the brink of a renewed civil war following the arrest of the main opposition party leader, Riek Machar. His party on Thursday said his detention has effectively collapsed a 2018 peace deal that ended five years of fighting which left hundreds of thousands dead.

South Sudan’s main opposition party said its leader Riek Machar has been arrested as the U.N. called on all parties to uphold the 2018 agreement that ended the country's civil war. The U.N. had warned on Monday that the country was teetering on the edge of a renewed civil war after fighting in the north between an armed group allied to Machar and government forces.
