Khalil filed a lawsuit, also known as a habeas petition, protesting his detention in New York. A New York judge previously ordered the case to continue in New Jersey because Khalil’s attorneys filed the petition while he was detained in New Jersey.

Lawyers for a Columbia University graduate student who has become the face of President Donald Trump’s crackdown on campus protests against Israel are expected to appear before a judge in Newark, New Jersey.

The court fight in Newark is a continuation of one that began in New York City, but which was transferred across the Hudson River after a judge determined a federal court in New Jersey was the proper jurisdiction for the case.
