Chinese state media are commending President Donald Trump’s move to disband Voice of America and other U.S. government-funded news organizations that broadcast to authoritarian regimes. The state-backed Global Times published an editorial Monday in which it called VOA a “lie factory” with an “appalling track record” when it comes to China-related reporting.

Kari Lake, Special Adviser at the U.S. Agency for Global Media, whom President Donald Trump appointed to lead the VOA, announced the cancellation of the contracts on Thursday. According to the AP, Lake estimated the decision would save taxpayers approximately $53 million.

Lake was sworn in as USAGM’s special adviser on March 3, saying she’s “looking forward” to serving America and “streamlining” the agency. The cuts from the agency follow President Donald Trump’s push for his second administration to review the government’s wasteful spending.
