The reported request came amid tensions between Washington and Copenhagen over U.S. President Donald Trump's vow to take Greenland.

The US and Denmark may be at odds over Greenland, but when it comes to solving its egg shortage, Washington is looking to Copenhagen for help.

A representative of the US Department of Agriculture in Europe had sent formal inquiries to egg-producing European countries in late February. The department was reportedly seeking information on their ability and willingness to export eggs to the American markets.

President Donald Trump said Thursday the U.S. really needs Greenland "for national security" and suggested more U.S. troops could be heading that way.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture contacted Denmark to explore the possibility of egg exports despite rising prices and tensions related to Greenland. The American request was immediately rejected. The Danes pointed out that there are currently no egg surpluses in Europe.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has contacted Danish producers to supply eggs to replenish shortages affecting American stores. The shortage is due to the bird flu, which has significantly reduced the U.
