Opposition leader Lee Jae-myung was sworn in as South Korea’s next president on Wednesday following a dramatic snap election six months after the country’s previous leader declared martial law and plunged the nation into chaos.

It was unclear whether Lee’s election would cause any major, immediate shift in South Korea’s foreign policy. Lee, previously accused by critics of tilting toward China and North Korea and away from the U.

Democratic Party of South Korea candidate Lee Jae-myung rode a wave of resentment toward ousted former President Yoon Suk Yeol of the People Power Party.
