Michigan is under a blanket of heavy snow Monday as a powerful winter storm and bomb cyclone bring blizzard conditions across the Upper and Lower Peninsula.
A major winter storm, classified as a bomb cyclone, is currently sweeping into Michigan. How much snow will the blizzard bring near you?
“As the cold air passes over the unfrozen and relatively warm waters of the Great Lakes, warmth and moisture are transferred into the lowest portion of the atmosphere. The air rises, clouds form and grow into narrow band that produces 2 to 3 inches of snow per hour or more,” the NWS says.
The snow isn’t over yet and parts of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula are already digging out from 2 feet of it. The blizzard-like conditions trapped drivers in Marquette while toppling trees and power lines.
Fargo Police Sgt. Jordan Korte of the Neighborhood Services Division said the Fargo police responded to 20 traffic-related calls and nine property accidents on Sunday. Crash counts from West Fargo and Moorhead were not available as of press time.
The National Weather Service has extended a blizzard warning in Iowa and issued a snow squall warning for central Iowa.
