Leaked messages show prison staff at a Welsh prison laughing at violent encounters with inmates and making fun of self-harm incidents. In them, one staff member at privately run HMP Parc in Bridgend responded to a complaint about an inmate and said: "The prisoners need to be broken mentally and physically."

New York state prisons will release some inmates early because the system does not have enough corrections officers, weeks after the state fired more than 2,000 guards who went on strike over poor working conditions.

Leaked messages from a prison where 17 inmates died last year show staff laughing at beating inmates and joking about self-harm. The messages, seen by the PA news agency, show one staff member at HMP Parc, a privately-run prison in Bridgend, south Wales, suggesting they will provoke an inmate into an altercation.
