The mulch at the base of the tree should be spread to a distance of about 3 feet from the trunk and 2 to 3 inches thick. The thicker the better. Remove any mulch touching the trunk and rake it back.

You would, however, want to procure a mature specimen, at least a few feet tall, since sago palm growth is exceedingly slow, averaging about one inch of trunk elongation per year.
