The Justice Department is investigating whether a California law allowing trans athletes on female sports teams at state schools violates federal civil rights law. The probe was revealed a day after President Donald Trump threatened to revoke federal funding to the state if it ignored his executive order banning transgender athletes from women's sports.

The president said he would withhold federal funding, saying it was “totally unfair” for transgender athletes to compete in girls’ and women’s sports.
