I plan on using commercial-grade wire connectors to join the two wires ... of narrower wire don't make much difference (1 foot of 18 gauge == ~ 3 feet of 14 gauge).

Bulkhead connectors may be more popular for passing wires and cables through walls, but for many applications, feedthrough connectors can handle the task more elegantly and more economically.
