By 1994 Murrell was working as a research assistant to then SNP leader Alex Salmond in his Banff and Buchan constituency. During his time working for Salmond, Murrell helped organise SNP youth weekends. At one of these events in 1988 he first met the 18-year-old Nicola Sturgeon.

Former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell has appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court charged with embezzlement. Mr Murrell, the husband of former first minister Nicola Sturgeon, was charged in April of last year as part of an investigation into the party's funding and finances. He made no plea during a private hearing and was granted bail.
