As a tenuous ceasefire verges on collapse, Israel says it will take direct control of all humanitarian aid entering and distributed inside Gaza, according to agencies briefed on the plan.

The move was apparently part of a bid to force Hamas into accepting a temporary extension of a cease-fire and releasing more hostages.

Israel’s cutoff of food, fuel, medicine and other supplies to Gaza’s 2 million people has sent prices soaring and humanitarian groups into overdrive, trying to distribute dwindling stocks to the most vulnerable.

The move came hours after Israel had proposed a temporary extension of the truce, though one with terms that Hamas is unlikely to accept.

The head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, Unrwa, has accused Israel of weaponising humanitarian aid with its blockade of goods and electricity into Gaza. Speaking in Geneva, Philippe Lazzarini warned of a renewed hunger crisis if aid supplies did not resume.
