Following the deadly midair collision near Reagan National Airport (DCA) in January, the community came together at Capital One Arena on Sunday, raising over $1 million for those most impacted by the tragedy.

At the end of his figure skating performance, when the last note of his parents’ favorite song played in an arena packed with spectators and heavy with sorrow, Maxim Naumov dropped to his knees at the center of the ice. He remained there for what seemed like forever, awash in a spotlight, looking lost and sobbing.

Monumental Sports & Entertainment and U.S. Figure Skating announced activations honoring those impacted by the collision at Washington’s Reagan Airport.

Little more than a month after a tragic air disaster took the lives of 28 members of the US figure skating community, emotions were on full display Sunday in Washington, DC, for the “Legacy on Ice” tribute.

Today a capacity crowd at the Capital One Arena in downtown D.C. assembled to remember and honor the victims of the Jan. 29 plane crash that claimed 67, many young figure skaters, their families, coaches and friends from Northern Virginia.

Organizers of a figure skating event in Washington say they raised $1.2 million for victims of the D.C. plane crash and first responders.

The Legacy on Ice event at Capital One Arena on Sunday will recognize the skaters, coaches and parents who died in the January crash while raising money for first responders and the affected families.

Among those lending star power to the tribute/fundraiser are 1988 Olympic champion Brian Boitano and 1992 Olympic champion Kristi Yamaguchi.
