A panel of justices on Brazil's top court has said former President Jair Bolsonaro should stand trial for allegedly attempting to stage a coup against the current President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The Supreme Court's five-member panel voted unanimously in favour of the trial going ahead.

Brazil’s Supreme Court ordered former President Jair Bolsonaro to go on trial for allegedly plotting a coup in the country, dealing a blow to one of President Trump’s closest allies in Latin America.The justices ruled Wednesday in a hearing that Bolsonaro should stand trial on five charges over allegations the right-wing leader plotted a military takeover of the country in 2022 to prevent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva from taking office just weeks after the leftist won the presidential election.

Brazil’s supreme court on Wednesday decided to put the country’s former president Jair Bolsonaro on trial over an alleged coup plot. All the five judges accepted the charges against Bolsonaro which is related to an effort to claim power after his presidential election defeat in 2022.
